Northern Lights JV and Öresundskraft Kraft & Värme AB have entered into an agreement for transport and storage of CO₂ from the Filbornaverket waste-to-energy plant in Helsingborg.

The agreement has start-up targeted in the fourth quarter of 2029. Under the agreement Northern Lights will provide transport and storage services for up to 200,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year.

The agreement is based on a shared logistics model by utilising capacity in the Northern Lights’ shipping portfolio that enables efficient transport of CO₂.

“The agreement with Öresundskraft is an important milestone for Northern Lights and it further strengthens the Nordics as a leading CCS region. Öresundskraft’s project contributes to the development of a portfolio approach with shared infrastructure. This will be an enabler of further growth of the CCS industry “, says Tim Heijn, managing director of Northern Lights JV.

The project contributes to the development of export infrastructure for captured CO₂ in southern Sweden and can enable future CCS projects in the region.

“Northern Lights has been highly responsive to our needs and open to exploring new solutions throughout the process. Sharing infrastructure and finding solutions that work for multiple operators will be key. Northern Lights is playing an important role in making this possible, and we greatly appreciate their willingness to work with us to develop these solutions”, says Stefan Håkansson, CEO of Öresundskraft.

In the Öresundskraft project the CO₂ will be captured and liquefied at Filbornaverket, Öresundskraft’s waste-to-energy facility in Helsingborg before being transported by truck to Port of Halland in Halmstad. From here Northern Lights will transport the CO₂ by ship to the receiving terminal in Øygarden, Norway, for injection and storage in a designated reservoir 2,600 meters below the seabed in the North Sea. The agreement remains subject to certain agreed requirements.

Filbornaverket processes household and industrial waste and generates district heating and electricity for the Helsingborg region. Through the carbon capture project, Öresundskraft aims to capture both biogenic and fossil CO₂ emissions, contributing to emission reductions and carbon removal efforts.

Öresundskraft becomes the second Swedish customer to Northern Lights services, following last year’s announcement of a commercial cross-border transport and storage agreement with the Swedish district energy provider Stockholm Exergi.

Northern Lights started the first injections of liquid CO₂ for storage in 2025 and will with the Öresundskraft agreement have 7 industrial customers in 4 countries. Northern Lights is expanding its capacity from 1.5 million tonnes CO₂ per annum (mtpa) to more than 5 mtpa, and has currently capacity for customers available.

About Northern Lights

  • Northern Lights operates the world’s first open-source CO₂ transport and storage infrastructure. Our mission is to enable the reduction and removal of industrial emissions in Europe.
  • Liquefied CO₂ from capture sites is shipped to the Northern Lights onshore receiving terminal in Øygarden, Norway, before transported by pipeline 110 km offshore for permanent storage in a reservoir 2,600 meters under the seabed.
  • The first phase of Northern Lights is part of Longship, the Norwegian Government’s full-scale carbon capture and storage project.
  • Northern Lights will in the first phase transport and store CO₂ from two Norwegian industries; Heidelberg Materials’ cement factory in Brevik and the Hafslund Celsio’ waste-to-energy plant in Oslo.
  • In addition, the Northern Lights JV has signed commercial agreements with Yara in the Netherlands, Ørsted in Denmark, Stockholm Exergi in Sweden, and Inherit in Norway.
  • Northern Lights JV is a registered Norwegian partnership with shared liability (DA) owned by Equinor, TotalEnergies and Shell.
