Annual report 2024: Northern Lights ready for operations
April 24, 2025

Northern Lights is ready to start CO2 transportation and storage services for industrial emitters in 2025, following a year of important milestones and valuable lessons learned. All detailed in the annual report for 2024.
2024 was a pivotal year for Northern Lights, with the delivery of CO2 ships, the receiving terminal infrastructure, the export pipeline and the injection facilities at Øygarden. A key highlight was marking the later milestone with a celebration event and the Northern Lights 7th Summit.
“We are close to delivering on our goal to safely and permanently store CO2 in the underground and thereby offering an effective solution for companies to reduce emissions. We are expecting to start collecting CO₂ in the summer of 2025,” says Tim Heijn, Managing Director of Northern Lights JV.
2024 also brought important learnings. The first two dedicated CO₂ ships, Northern Pioneer and Northern Pathfinder, was completed and delivered and arrived in Norway in early 2025. Building the world’s first CO₂ ships provided valuable insights, resulting in a significantly more efficient delivery of the second vessel.
One key lesson from 2024 is that successful CCS development requires early alignment across the value chain, supported by clear timelines, strong policy support and mutual technical understanding. A final investment decision (FID) on a carbon capture or storage project, is a major milestone that requires alignment among multiple stakeholders.
In March 2025, Northern Lights proudly announced that the project took a major step forward as the owners Equinor, Shell and TotalEnergies made an investment decision to expand capacity from 1.5 million to a minimum of 5 million tonnes of CO2 per year – backed by €131 million in EU funding.
“We have much to do in 2025, many challenges to overcome and hopefully many celebrations ahead of us – I look forward to facing those with you all in the spirit of partnership to make Northern Lights truly shine,” says Alistair Tucker Chair, Northern Lights Company Meeting.
