Northern Lights JV is proud to share that the Longship project has been awarded Næringslivets klimapris 2025 at this year’s Zerokonferansen in Oslo! The award is presented by ZERO, NHO and NTNU, and recognises innovative and impactful climate initiatives in the Norwegian business sector.

The jury emphasised Longship’s role in establishing Europe’s first full value chain for CO₂ capture, transport and storage, calling it a key enabler for large-scale emissions reductions with strong commercial potential and international relevance.

“The winner is receiving this award for having established essential infrastructure for major emission reductions from Norwegian and European industry, with significant commercial potential. The project will deliver Norway’s largest single-source emissions cut and has demonstrated strong international impact. The winner is therefore a role model for Norwegian climate action, both nationally and internationally,” said jury member Vikas Thakur, Dean at NTNU, during the award ceremony.

The Longship project demonstrates that large-scale carbon capture and storage is both technically feasible and operationally effective. Northern Lights’ CO₂ ships now transport captured CO₂ from Brevik on a weekly basis, and approximately 1,000 tonnes of liquefied CO₂ are stored securely beneath the North Sea every day.

“We share this award with the entire Longship team and extend our appreciation to the Norwegian authorities, to our owners Shell, Equinor and TotalEnergies, to Heidelberg Materials and Celsio, and to the many reliable suppliers who have contributed to the development of this project, says Morten Eek, Senior Communication Advisor, Northern Lights JV.

And operations are advancing:

• A third CO₂ ship will be delivered from the shipyard in December
• In 2026, Northern Lights will begin handling emissions from Yara in the Netherlands and Ørsted in Denmark
• Celsio and Stockholm Exergi are scheduled to come online thereafter

Northern Lights are now expanding to a minimum of 5 million tonnes annually with a commercially based investment to meet growing demand from European industries.

About Northern Lights
• Northern Lights offers CO₂ transport and storage as a service.
• Our mission is to enable the reduction and removal of industrial emissions in Europe.
• Liquefied CO₂ from capture sites is shipped to our onshore receiving terminal in western Norway, before transported by pipeline for permanent storage in a reservoir 2,600 meters under the seabed.
• Northern Lights is the first company to offer commercial CCS services.
• The first phase of Northern Lights is part of Longship, the Norwegian Government’s full-scale carbon capture and storage project.
• Northern Lights will transport and store CO₂ from two Norwegian industries; Heidelberg Materials’ cement factory in Brevik and the Hafslund Celsio’ waste-to-energy plant in Oslo.
• In addition, the Northern Lights JV has signed commercial agreements with Yara in the Netherlands, Ørsted in Denmark, and Stockholm Exergi in Sweden.
