UK and Norwegian Prime Ministers visit Northern Lights to sign new strategic partnership
December 16, 2024
Today, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited the recently completed Northern Lights CO2 receiving facility together with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre to see first-hand how the facility will accelerate the green transition and reduce emissions.
During the visit, the parties signed a joint declaration of strategic partnership between Norway and the UK on defense and security, energy, and the green transition. The agreement includes the establishment of a Green Industrial Partnership in 2025.
“We need knowledge and innovation to better equip us to face the future. The new Green Industrial Partnership with the UK will be important in creating more green jobs here in Norway and for advancing the green transition”, said Prime Minister Støre.
Managing Director of Northern Lights Tim Heijn gave the Prime Ministers a tour of the Northern Lights facility together with Anders Opedal, CEO of Norwegian energy company Equinor where the Norwegian state is majority owner.
“The visit shows the importance of public and private partnership and cross-country collaboration to scale CCS and make it a successful industry”, said Heijn.
This was Keir Starmer’s first visit to Norway as UK Prime Minister and happened only days after contracts for the first CCS projects in the UK, the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) and Net Zero Teesside Power, were signed on December 10th. Northern Lights JV owners Equinor and TotalEnergies are shareholders of NEP together with partner bp.
