The Northern Purpose has arrived in Norway, marking another important milestone in the development of Northern Lights’ CO₂ transport infrastructure. 

Purpose-built for the safe and efficient transport of liquefied CO₂, Northern Purpose is the fourth vessel delivered to Northern Lights. Together with Northern Pioneer, Northern Pathfinder and Northern Phoenix, the vessel secures Northern Lights’ transport capacity and supports growing demand for CO₂ transport and storage services across Europe.

Following delivery from Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore Company (DSOC), Northern Purpose sailed from Asia to Europe and has now arrived in Norway ready to support upcoming customer operations. 

Flexible shipping solution 

At Northern Lights, shipping is at the centre of our approach to CO₂ transport and storage. Industrial emitters are spread across Europe, while suitable geological storage sites are located in a few regions. Dedicated CO₂ ships make it possible to connect capture sites in different countries to permanent storage infrastructure. 

Today, Northern Lights operates the world’s largest dedicated fleet for commercial CO₂ transport. As demand for CCS grows, the company is continuing to expand its transport capacity through Phase 2, including the addition of larger CO₂ ships from 2028 onwards. 

About Northern Lights 

  • Northern Lights offers CO₂ transport and storage as a service and started first injection of liquid CO₂ for permanent storage in August 2025.
  • Our mission is to enable the reduction and removal of industrial emissions in Europe. 
  • Liquefied CO₂ from capture sites is shipped to the Northern Lights onshore receiving terminal in western Norway, before transported by pipeline for permanent storage in a reservoir 2,600 meters under the seabed. 
  • Northern Lights JV is a registered, incorporated General Partnership with Shared Liability (DA) owned by Equinor, TotalEnergies and Shell. 
  • The first phase of Northern Lights is part of Longship, the Norwegian Government’s full-scale carbon capture and storage project. 
  • Northern Lights will transport and store CO₂ from two Norwegian industries; Heidelberg Materials’ cement factory in Brevik and the Hafslund Celsio’ waste-to-energy plant in Oslo. 
  • In addition, the Northern Lights JV has signed commercial agreements with Yara in the Netherlands, Ørsted in Denmark, Stockholm Exergi in Sweden, and Inherit in Norway.
