With the arrival of nine new CO₂ storage tanks at the Øygarden receiving terminal, Northern Lights Phase 2 is visible in Øygarden.

“The tanks are here, which marks a milestone in scaling CCS to meet European decarbonisation targets. By increasing storage capacity, we commit to offering CO₂ storage to a growing number of industrial customers across borders”, says Tim Heijn, Managing Director at Northern Lights.

Phase 2 will more than double the terminal’s storage capacity to a minimum of 5 million tonnes of CO₂ per year. This significantly increases the flexibility and availability of permanent CO₂ storage for emitters in hard-to-abate sectors. Each tank has a storage capacity of 680 cubic metres and stands above 30 metres tall, identical in design to the tanks delivered during Phase 1.

The storage tanks have been manufactured in Spain by IDESA and transported to Øygarden by ship. Bring with their subcontractors has executed the transport and offloading operation under supervision of the Equinor Technical Service Provider (TSP) project team.

“I am very happy to see that the transport and offloading operation of the storage tanks has been executed in an efficient manner without any incidents. It is an important milestone for the Phase 2 project and a visible landmark at our site in Øygarden. Thanks to our contractors and Equinor colleagues that have been working hard to execute this operation”, says Knut Mathias Vestbø, Equinor TSP Project Director for Phase 2.

Supported by the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility

The Phase 2 expansion is supported by a grant from the Connecting Europe Facility for Energy  (CEF Energy) and will be financed primarily through commercial investments. The European Commission has approved an award of €131 million under the CEF funding scheme.

Northern Lights has signed three commercial agreements for cross-border CO₂ transport and storage with Yara SluiskilØrsted, and Stockholm Exergi.

With Phase 1 on track for operations in 2025 and Phase 2 construction now underway, Northern Lights is delivering on its mission: To provide CO₂ transport and storage as a service, at scale, for European industry.
